Four categories from which you build a wireless smart home
Every smart home in an existing flat consists of the same four building blocks. You do not need all of them. You can start with lighting only and add components gradually.
- Lighting - smart bulbs, smart switches replacing existing buttons, LED strips. The most popular entry point.
- Heating - smart thermostatic radiator valves, central thermostat for a gas boiler or heat pump.
- Security and access - motion sensors, door and window opening sensors, cameras, smart lock.
- Central control unit and operation - hub or platform that brings everything together and enables automation.
The order is deliberate: lighting and heating offer the greatest comfort benefit for the smallest investment. Security makes sense to add after a few weeks, once you are used to the controls. Decide on the central hub right at the start, switching later means buying new hardware.
Lighting: Shelly, IKEA Tradfri, Philips Hue
Three sensible ways to bring smart lighting into your flat without touching the walls:
Shelly Plus 1PM (and the Shelly family)
A relay the size of a matchbox that is installed behind the existing switch directly into the electrician's box. The existing classic switch remains and continues to function. Wi-Fi control and consumption monitoring are added. The best option for those who wish to retain their classic switches and simply make them smarter.
| Product | Usage | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Shelly Plus 1PM | With a switch that measures consumption | ~720 Kč |
| Shelly Plus 2PM | Two loads from one box | ~990 Kč |
| Shelly Dimmer 2 | Dimmable light | ~1 290 Kč |
| Shelly Plus i4 | Dry-contact smart button | ~560 Kč |
IKEA Tradfri
The cheapest route to smart lighting if you can accept a limited range of colour temperatures and occasional system updates. E27 LED bulbs from 199 Kč. Works well with the IKEA Dirigera hub (~1 500 Kč), which is Matter-compatible. Light quality is decent but does not match Philips Hue.
Philips Hue
Premium ecosystem. White bulbs (~850 Kč) and White & Color (~1 900 Kč), Lightstrip Plus LED strips from 2 200 Kč/2m. The Hue Bridge (~2 100 Kč) is now Matter-compatible. Most stable app and best colour quality, but double the price compared to IKEA.
Practical advice from flats in Prague. Combining Shelly behind the switch with neutral LED bulbs from Philips (not Hue, standard White) is the most economical solution. You retain a classic switch for family and guests, while the app serves as a bonus. For the living room, consider only a Hue strip behind the TV: the visual impact is disproportionately high relative to the cost.
Heating: tado, Netatmo, Shelly TRV, Eve
Heating is the most cost-effective category. A smart thermostat with a heating schedule typically saves 10-20% on heating costs, which for a 3+kk flat in Prague means 4-8 thousand Kč per year. The investment pays back within 1-3 heating seasons.
Smart thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
For flats with central heating and radiators, this is the foundation. You replace the mechanical head with a smart one that allows room-specific programming.
| Product | Note | Price |
|---|---|---|
| tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat V3+ | Most widespread, requires a Tado Bridge | ~1 890 Kč |
| Shelly BLU TRV | Bluetooth, requires Shelly gateway | ~1 490 Kč |
| Aqara Radiator Thermostat E1 | Zigbee and Matter via Aqara hub | ~1 350 Kč |
| Eve Thermo | Thread/HomeKit, without a hub | ~2 490 Kč |
For a 3+kk apartment with six radiators, the set of heads plus bridge represents an investment of 10-16 thousand Kč depending on selection. The difference in actual functionality between manufacturers is small, prices, integration with your existing ecosystem (Apple Home vs Google Home) and app reliability are decisive.
Central thermostat for a boiler or heat pump
If you have your own gas boiler or heat pump (which is still less common in Prague flats but standard in detached houses), replace the original thermostat with a smart one:
- tado Wireless Smart Thermostat - ~4,500 Kč, compatible with 95% of boilers, geolocation.
- Netatmo Smart Thermostat - ~4 900 Kč, Philippe Starck design, HomeKit.
- Shelly Wall Display - ~3 200 Kč, versatile display with thermostat function.
Security: Aqara sensors, cameras, Nuki lock
A category that depends most on your threshold for paranoia and what you actually want to measure. For an apartment in Prague, two or three items are usually sufficient: intrusion detection, visual door monitoring, and access backup.
Aqara Sensors
Aqara Zigbee sensors offer the best price-to-quality ratio on the market. Compact size, two-year battery life, and Matter compatibility via the Aqara Hub M2 or M3.
| Product | Usage | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Aqara Hub M2 | Central unit, Zigbee | ~1 490 Kč |
| Aqara Hub M3 | Matter Bridge, higher performance | ~2 790 Kč |
| Aqara Motion Sensor P1 | Motion and lighting, battery | ~590 Kč |
| Aqara Door & Window Sensor | Opening doors/windows | ~450 Kč |
| Aqara Water Leak Sensor | Flooding under the sink or in the bathroom | ~490 Kč |
| Aqara Temperature and Humidity | Measuring room climate | ~490 Kč |
Cameras
Cameras have two decision axes: cloud or local recording, and the quality-to-price ratio.
- Eufy Indoor Cam 2K - Approximately 1 400 Kč, local storage on microSD, optional cloud. A reasonable compromise.
- Reolink E1 Pro - ~1 600 Kč, microSD, RTSP support for Home Assistant and NAS.
- EZVIZ C6N - approx. 1 200 Kč, cloud dependency, widely available.
- Ubiquiti UniFi G5 Instant - ~3 200 Kč + NVR, professional quality, local storage.
Privacy notice. Cameras manufactured in China and connected to the cloud (EZVIZ, Xiaomi, Tuya) transmit at least metadata to servers in Asia. If you have a home office or this concerns you for another reason, choose Eufy with local storage or Ubiquiti.
Nuki Smart Lock
The most popular smart lock retrofit in Europe. It is installed from the inside of the door onto an existing cylindrical core: the door facade remains unchanged, and moving out simply means removing the Nuki and leaving the original lock.
| Product | Functions | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Nuki Smart Lock 4 | Motorised lock, HomeKit/Matter | ~6 800 Kč |
| Nuki Smart Lock 4 Pro | + Wi-Fi, integrated bridge | ~8 900 Kč |
| Nuki Keypad 2.0 | Code entry from outside | ~3 490 Kč |
| Nuki Opener | Remote opening of building entrance doors | ~2 890 Kč |
Central hub: HomeKit, Google Home, Matter, Home Assistant
All the categories listed above require a platform to bring them together. The decision here has long-term implications, hardware is easier to change than a platform, as you will build automations around it.
Apple HomeKit (Apple Home)
If you have an iPhone, this is the simplest option. HomePod (~3 700 Kč) or Apple TV function as a hub. Matter support is integrated, the interface is professional, and automation is processed locally. Limitation: native support only for Matter/HomeKit certified devices; integration with PV systems or heat pumps is limited.
Google Home
For Android users. Nest Hub Max (~6 800 Kč) or Nest Mini (~1 200 Kč) as the hub. Best voice control, but automation is weaker than with HomeKit or HA.
Matter (standard)
It is not a platform but a compatibility standard. Devices with the Matter logo work in Apple Home, Google Home and SmartThings. By 2026, most newer devices will be Matter-ready, if you are buying today, pay attention to this.
Home Assistant (HA)
Open source platform running on Raspberry Pi 5 (~2 400 Kč), mini PC or NAS. Maximum flexibility, most integrations (3 000+), fully local. Requires basic technical skills. Home Assistant Green (~2 900 Kč) or Yellow are official hardware variants that significantly simplify installation.
Decision matrix: for most Prague apartments we recommend HA as the brain and HomeKit as the interface for the family. HA can bridge this, control is available in Apple Home, while automation and integration remain in HA. More details in the article. Home Assistant vs Loxone vs KNX.

Limits of wireless solutions: where they stop being sufficient
Wireless retrofit is excellent for existing flats, but it has objective limits. It makes sense to be aware of them beforehand, before you invest 40 thousand Kč and start hitting the boundaries.
Radiators
Most battery-free sensors and TRV heads last 1-3 years. In an apartment with 15 sensors, this means 5+ battery changes per year. Zigbee performs better than Wi-Fi, but it will never beat wired power.
Wi-Fi Range and Reliability
A panel apartment with a single router in the centre typically covers a 3+kk flat without issue. An old brick house with thick load-bearing walls may surprise you. Solution: mesh Wi-Fi (UniFi, TP-Link Deco, Google Nest Wifi) or Zigbee routers that form a mesh network themselves.
Securing wireless communication
Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, all use encryption, but locally known vulnerabilities exist. For a standard flat this is not a real issue; for critical infrastructure (doctors, lawyers, developers with sensitive IP) we recommend VLANs and isolating smart home devices from the main network.
Dependence on Wi-Fi and the internet
Most cloud-based solutions (Tuya, Ring, Arlo) will refuse to work without an internet connection. Local solutions (Home Assistant, Apple Home with a local hub) function even offline. When planning, consider the scenario where "the router has failed, your wife comes home and needs to turn on the light".
Lifecycle update
Shelly, Aqara and Philips Hue manufacturers provide 5+ years of updates. Smaller brands and Chinese white-label products (Tuya-based) typically offer 2-3 years. If you are buying today, choose brands with a proven track record and, if possible, Matter-certified devices.
When does it make sense to switch to Loxone or KNX
Rule of thumb from our projects: if the planned wireless budget exceeds 40 000 Kč and you have a renovation plan within three years, consider a professional system. Reasons:
- Economics40 000 Kč for wireless is approximately 30% of the cost of a complete Loxone installation for the same apartment. The difference covers professional design, hardwired power supply, long-term reliability and aesthetics.
- Quality of life. Wire systems have no batteries to replace and no Wi-Fi that occasionally drops out. Once installed, they are "invisible".
- Long-term value. Professional installation adds value to a property; wireless systems add almost none.
- Scalability. Loxone or KNX offers a clear path for adding PV systems, heat pumps, and security. Wireless combinations can also do this, but usually in a convoluted way.
Conversely, if you are renting, plan to stay in the flat for no more than five years, or do not want to disturb your neighbour by drilling into walls, wireless is the clear choice, and the investment is modular. You can take everything with you.
What to do next. Browse our 10 questions before making a decision and find out whether your situation points more towards a professional system. If you stick with wireless, start with a minimal setup for 5 000 Kč, live with it for two months and then expand. A system you do not use was unnecessary, even if it cost a thousand.
Realistic estimate: for a standard Prague apartment (2+1 or 3+1), wireless solutions cover 80% of the comfort offered by professional installations at 400 000 Kč, costing between 15-25 thousand Kč. The remaining 20% of comfort (aesthetics, invisibility, premium controllers, integration into the apartment project) is what you pay for when switching to Loxone or KNX. For most tenants and short-term owners, this is not economically justifiable.
