System Comparison

Home Assistant vs Loxone vs KNX: comparison of smart home systems 2026

Three systems, three different philosophies. An open-source platform for technically savvy owners, a proprietary end-to-end solution from a single supplier, and an industrial standard over thirty years old. What to choose and why.

Why we are comparing these three specifically

On the smart home market today there are dozens of platforms: from cheap Tuya devices through Apple HomeKit and Google Home to industrial systems such as Beckhoff. However, most customers in Prague and the surrounding area actually choose from three dominant technologies in practice, which represent three completely different approaches to smart living.

Home Assistant It is an open-source software platform that anyone can install on a Raspberry Pi or mini-PC. It connects anything together via software, Shelly, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, KNX, even Loxone, but the responsibility for configuration and operation lies with the owner.

Loxone It is an Austrian manufacturer of a complete ecosystem: Miniserver control unit, distribution board modules, switches, sensors and the app. Everything from a single source, requiring a certified installer (Loxone Partner).

KNX It is not a manufacturer but an open standard used by over 500 European companies (ABB, Gira, Jung, Schneider, Siemens). Modules from different brands communicate with each other because they use the same protocol. The standard was established in 1990 as EIB and is now the most widely adopted solution for commercial and premium residential installations across Europe.

The difference is not just in the price; it also lies in who bears responsibility for the project, how long the system will function after the installer has left, and what an expansion will cost ten years later. The following sections summarise the strengths and weaknesses of each platform, followed by a table of 15 criteria and a decision matrix.

Home Assistant: open-source freedom at the cost of your own labour

Home Assistant (HA) is free software written in Python that runs on Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, Intel NUC, Synology NAS or any Linux server. The key development company Nabu Casa is based in the Netherlands and funds itself through the optional Nabu Casa Cloud service (6.50 USD per month).

HA's strength lies in its range of integrations: according to the official website, it exceeds 3 000 integrations from Philips Hue, IKEA Tradfri, Shelly, Tuya, Xiaomi, through Tesla Powerwall, PV inverters (GoodWe, Solax, Victron), thermometers, wallbox chargers, MQTT, ESPHome to KNX gateway and Loxone Miniserver. Anything with an API or documented protocol can be integrated into HA.

Who is this suitable for

For the technically savvy owner: IT professional, developer, hobbyist electrician, or anyone comfortable reading YAML configuration files, managing updates after updates, and occasionally spending an evening debugging automation. The community is huge (forum, Reddit /r/homeassistant, hundreds of YouTube channels), but the language barrier is real, 95% of materials are in English.

Where things go wrong

Home Assistant is not a product but a platform. Updates do introduce breaking changes; the Zigbee mesh occasionally decides not to cooperate, and integrations sometimes stop working after an update to the supplier's API. This does not matter in the apartment of an enthusiast owner. However, it is a problem in a household where a colleague's wife expects that when she switches off the light switch, the light simply goes out.

Loxone: proprietary end-to-end solution

Loxone is an Austrian company (founded in 2009, based in Kollerschlag) with a branch in Prague. The key product is Mini-server - control unit for the distribution board, communicating with modules via the proprietary Loxone Tree and Loxone Air (wireless variant) bus. Programming is carried out in the desktop application Loxone Config, while users interact via the Loxone App (iOS/Android).

The entire ecosystem comes from a single source: dimmers, relays, Touch switches, RGBW driver, intercom, weather sensor, NFC Code Touch, all Loxone. The advantage is that everything works together without surprises. The disadvantage is vendor lock-in. If you decide to move elsewhere in five years, you have to remove everything from the distribution board and start from scratch.

Who is this suitable for

For owners of new builds or major renovations with a budget from 180 000 Kč, who wants their smart home to "just work" and has no interest in programming it themselves. The Loxone Partner handles the complete project, installation and inspection. Typically a family with children where comfort and reliability take priority over technological experimentation.

Where things go wrong

The aforementioned vendor lock-in. Also: the app is good, but not the best on the market; integration with external systems (for example advanced PV system optimisation) requires creative workarounds via Virtual HTTP or Modbus. After the installer leaves, you have a Config file, but without training you cannot change anything in it. The cost to add three switches after one year: approx. 8 000 - 15 000 Kč including service call-out.

The result of a quality professional installation, regardless of the platform, the key is the project, not the brand.

KNX: an industrial standard with a 35-year history

KNX originated as EIB (European Installation Bus) in 1990 and today is standardised as ISO/IEC 14543-3. This does not mean one company, but an association of 500+ manufacturers who have contractually committed to adhering to the protocol. In practice, you can combine a Gira switch, an ABB dimmer, a Theben sensor and a Basalte touch panel in a single project. They communicate with each other thanks to standard programming software called ETS (Engineering Tool Software).

KNX is dominant in Europe for commercial installations: hotels, offices, museums, hospitals. In the residential sector, it is typical for premium new builds or renovations with a clear budget.

Who is this suitable for

For an investor who cares about a long-term investment (15+ years), the option to select brands based on aesthetics (Gira E2, Basalte, JUNG LS pure, ABB Busch-iceLight) and on availability of multiple service providers. As it is an open standard, any KNX-certified partner can take on the work.

Where things go wrong

Price. A KNX switch typically costs 1 800 - 5 000 Kč per unit, and one dimmer module 8 000 - 15 000 Kč. For a small flat, this is hardly justifiable. Another issue: ETS software It is paid for (approx. 1 400 EUR for a full licence), which prevents the owner from programming anything themselves. The user interface for the end user (mobile app) is not part of the standard. It is handled separately via Gira X1/G1, Basalte Core, or through a gateway to Home Assistant.

Decision matrix: what to choose based on profile

If you are…

What no retailer will tell you

Home Assistant is not a product for end users.

The HA Forum is full of posts like "my light isn't working, help me". If your partner expects a plug-and-play experience, Home Assistant won't deliver that. without external IT support does not deliver. Either you programme it yourself and devote 5-10 hours a month to it, or you hire someone to set up the system as a service for you. The third option, "I'll install it over the weekend": usually ends either at the first problem or with a functional but minimally used system.

Loxone vendor lock-in is real

After five years you will want to add a dimmer. By then Loxone will have launched a new generation; the old one is no longer sold and the new one has a different price. Or you may decide you want an Apple Home app instead of the Loxone App, technically this works via a gateway, but in practice it is fragile. Loxone Partners will logically advise on what they sell. Therefore, before signing, ask what happens if you do not wish to continue with this partner.

KNX is more expensive due to installation labour, not because of the hardware.

People believe that KNX costs so much because of premium brands. In reality, most of the cost is the hourly rate of a certified integrator and time spent in ETS. Programming a fully connected family home in ETS takes 80 - 160 hours. At rates of 1 500 - 2 500 Kč/h, this amounts to 120 - 400 thousand Kč for the software part of the project alone.

Hybrid is a viable option, yet nobody talks about it.

The best results in practice are often achieved by combining: KNX or Loxone as the backbone for lighting, shading and heating (reliability, installed by a professional) + Home Assistant as the "brain" for PV system optimisation, dashboard, voice integration and connection to anything else. The division of responsibility between the installer (infrastructure) and the owner/IT partner (HA) works well.

Conclusion: there is no better system, only a more suitable one.

The decision between Home Assistant, Loxone and KNX is less about technology and more about... who and how will manage the system in the long term. Home Assistant is powerful for those who want full control over the system and have the time for it. Loxone is a practical choice for families seeking a single solution from one supplier. KNX is an investment for decades to come, and at the same time, the most expensive entry barrier.

In practice, it holds that The best project is one that respects your maintenance capabilities. It is not just about buying and installing the system, but ensuring that after four years it still performs as you wished.
