Ask two expats in Prague about their heating and you may get two completely different answers, even in similar buildings a few streets apart. One has no idea where the heat actually comes from and gets a bill that lumps it in with the service charge. The other has a boiler on the kitchen wall and adjusts it directly. Before you buy a single smart device, it is worth knowing which situation you are in - it changes what automation can realistically do.

Two very different starting points
Many Czech apartment buildings, especially panel-built housing and older blocks in the centre, are connected to a shared heat source - hot water piped in from a district boiler house or a cogeneration plant and distributed to every flat through a communal system. Others, more often houses and some renovated buildings, have their own gas boiler or, increasingly, a heat pump serving just that one household. If you moved from a country where every home simply has its own furnace, this split can be confusing - and it matters a great deal for what smart heating can actually achieve.
District heating: what you can and cannot control
With district heating, the building - not you - controls the water temperature entering the radiators and often follows a seasonal schedule set by the supplier or the building association. Costs are frequently split between a fixed charge per square metre and a variable share based on individual radiator meters or heat-cost allocators, so your own consumption still matters even though you do not control the source. What you can do is manage how much of that available heat actually reaches each room and when. You cannot make the building's heating season start earlier, and you cannot lower the incoming water temperature yourself - those decisions sit with the building or the heat supplier.
Your own boiler or heat pump: full control
If you have your own gas boiler or heat pump, the picture is different: you control the source directly. A smart thermostat can adjust boiler modulation based on outdoor temperature, run a proper day-and-night schedule, and respond to whether anyone is actually home. This is the setup where automation has the most room to work, because every part of the chain - source, distribution, and room control - is under your influence rather than a shared decision made for the whole building.
Automating thermostatic heads either way
Regardless of which category you are in, a smart thermostatic radiator valve is usually the most useful single upgrade. It replaces the manual dial on each radiator with a head that follows a schedule and a target room temperature, so a bedroom can run cooler overnight while a living room warms up before you get home - all without touching the shared heating system. In a district-heated building this optimises how the heat you are already paying for gets distributed and reduces the obvious waste of heating an empty room at full blast. With your own boiler, it does the same room-by-room job and can additionally feed data back to a central thermostat controlling the boiler itself, closing the loop end to end.
One limitation worth knowing. In some district-heated buildings the radiators have limited or one-way valves fitted as part of the shared system, which can restrict which smart heads are compatible. Check your existing valve before buying anything - it is a five-minute look, and it avoids returning the wrong part.
What "savings" honestly means here
You will see smart heating marketed with confident percentage savings figures. We are not going to repeat one, because the honest answer is that it depends on too many things to reduce to a single number: how the apartment was heated before you installed anything, how well insulated the building is, how consistent your previous habits were, and - critically - whether you are on district heating or your own source. A household that already turned radiators down when out will see less change than one that left everything running flat out around the clock. What we can say with confidence is that automated scheduling removes the obvious waste of heating rooms nobody is in, and that is worth doing regardless of the number attached to it.
